HSN codes for auto parts
The HSN headings auto component makers use most, from 8708 vehicle parts to bearings, fasteners, springs and rubber parts, and how many digits your invoice needs.
What an HSN code is
HSN stands for Harmonised System of Nomenclature, the international system for classifying goods. Under GST every line on an invoice carries the HSN code of the item. Codes are built in pairs of digits: the first two are the chapter, the first four the heading, six digits the sub-heading, and eight digits the Indian tariff item.
How many digits your invoice needs
- Turnover up to ₹5 crore in the previous financial year: at least 4 digits on business-to-business invoices.
- Turnover above ₹5 crore: at least 6 digits on all invoices.
- Exports and imports use the full 8 digits.
Headings auto component makers use most
Heading 8708 covers parts and accessories of motor vehicles (cars, buses, trucks and tractors):
| HSN | Covers |
|---|---|
| 8708 10 | Bumpers and parts |
| 8708 21 | Safety seat belts |
| 8708 29 | Other parts and accessories of bodies |
| 8708 30 | Brakes, servo-brakes and parts |
| 8708 40 | Gear boxes and parts |
| 8708 50 | Drive axles and non-driving axles |
| 8708 70 | Road wheels, parts and accessories |
| 8708 80 | Suspension systems and shock absorbers |
| 8708 91 | Radiators and parts |
| 8708 92 | Silencers and exhaust pipes |
| 8708 93 | Clutches and parts |
| 8708 94 | Steering wheels, columns and boxes |
| 8708 95 | Safety airbags with inflater system |
| 8708 99 | Other parts and accessories |
Parts for two-wheelers are under heading 8714, not 8708.
Many components are classified by what they are, not by where they are fitted:
| HSN | Covers |
|---|---|
| 4016 | Articles of vulcanised rubber: gaskets, O-rings, bushes |
| 7318 | Screws, bolts, nuts and washers of iron or steel |
| 7320 | Springs and leaves for springs |
| 8409 | Parts for engines: pistons, rings, valves |
| 8421 | Oil, fuel and air filters |
| 8482 | Ball and roller bearings |
| 8483 | Transmission shafts, cranks, gears, bearing housings |
| 8511 | Ignition and starting equipment: spark plugs, starters |
| 8512 | Lighting, signalling, wipers and horns for vehicles |
| 8544 | Wiring sets for vehicles |
Raw material carries its own heading. Steel bars and rods, for example, are in chapter 72 (heading 7214 for hot-rolled bars).
How to choose the right code
- Start from what the item is. A bolt is 7318 whether it goes into a car or a pump.
- Use 8708 for parts made specifically for motor vehicles that are not named elsewhere in the tariff.
- If your customer or supplier already uses a code for the same part, check it against the tariff rather than copying it.
- When two headings seem to fit, ask your accountant. A wrong code can mean a wrong rate.
GST rates
Rates are set against HSN codes and are revised from time to time, so this page does not list them. Check the current rate for your code on the GST portal or with your accountant before you set it on the product.
Keeping codes in the ERP
In ARUKZ ERP the HSN code is entered once on the product and prints on every quotation and invoice. The e-invoice file cannot be created for an invoice with a missing HSN code; the system lists the lines to fix. See GST invoicing.
This list is a working reference, not a ruling on classification. Confirm codes against the customs tariff for your exact product.
